International scoliosis awareness day 2017

Hello everyone,

Today I wanted to do a blog post as it is International Scoliosis Awareness Day! The day is dedicated to spreading positive awareness about the condition and uniting all those who suffer from it. Educating people on scoliosis is a great thing to do, and In some cases it can help people to become aware of the signs to look for, along with helping to detect the condition early on, ultimately preventing the need for surgery.

Scoliosis is a disorder with abnormal sideways or lateral curvature of the spine. A normal spine is straight, but it will have a natural curve within it. However, if that curve is over 10 degrees it can be considered a case of mild scoliosis.

if scoliosis is not treated/ diagnosed it can lead to:

Increase curvature of the spine
Progression or deterioration of scoliosis
Back pain and other associated symptoms
Pressure on vital organs
Breathing difficulties
Cardiac problems
Digestive issues
Poor balance and coordination

Some of the above are pretty obvious signs that something is wrong, if you have any of these issues please, even if it isn't scoliosis go to the doctors and get it checked.

Scoliosis is not a rare condition but there is still very little knowledge or understanding about it and the affects it can have on the patient and their family.  Scoliosis can often leave people feeling isolated and unsure as to where to turn for advice and support.

Scoliosis Association (UK), decided that it was time to change this, and so in 2013 they launched International Scoliosis Awareness Day. The day is celebrated every year on the last Saturday of June.

International scoliosis awareness day, sends a beautiful message to all those suffering from the condition, You are not alone !

If you are worried, and you think you may have scoliosis, please read my blog post How to detect scoliosis or you can ask someone to stand behind you whilst you bend over, this is known as the Adams forward bending test. A normal back will be even on both sides. However, if your back is not even and there is a visible hunch, you should get it checked because it is likely that you could have scoliosis and it is better to find it earlier and help to stop rapid curve progression.

Thankyou for reading this blog post and I hope you have learnt something/ found it useful in some way.

Happy international scoliosis awareness day !

Sadie xoxo
